JUNE 2024
A Colorful Collaboration
SVHC staff were excited to channel their inner Bob Ross to help support the students at Cortland School District's Smith School and local artist Molly Reagan in the transforming of the school’s basketball court into a vibrant, fun space, promoting positive values among the students. This project allowed multidisciplinary programming to occur which included mental health lessons from the Mental Health Association and SPEAK UP Cortland.
This project is made possible through the CNY Arts Grants for Regional Arts and Cultural Engagement regrant program thanks to a New York State Senate Initiative supported by the NYS Legislature, the Office of the Governor, and administered by the New York State Council on the Arts. Additional support and sponsorship for this project included Seven Valleys Health Coalition, Lowe’s, SPEAK UP Cortland, Mental Health Association, Cortland County Mental Health Department, Smith School, and Molly Reagan.
That’s a Wrap!
Seven Valleys Food Rescue (SVFR), Syracuse Onondaga Food Alliance, and Center for Sustainable Community Solutions wrapped up a 16 month project supported by the Mother Cabrini Foundation that allowed SVFR to provide technical assistance to an up-and-coming food rescue program in the Syracuse area. We are excited to announce that Onondaga Food Rescue Network is officially here!
Mighty and Murray Mooved it Along at the Dairy Parade
Our beloved dental health mascot, Mighty Molar, made a star appearance at this year's Cortland County Dairy Parade! Celebrating the importance of milk for strong, healthy teeth, Mighty Molar danced and waved to the crowd, spreading smiles and dental health awareness. We were thrilled to promote the benefits of local milk and its role in maintaining good oral health. The highlight of the day? We distributed hundreds of toothbrushes to excited parade-goers, ensuring that everyone could go home with the tools for a brighter smile. Thanks to all who joined us for this tooth-rific event!
Coming Soon! Postpartum Support Program
With the securing of additional funding through Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and The Community Foundation, we are excited to work towards extending our current birth doula program into the tender postpartum time. This programming allows community members to have the assistance, companionship, and mental health support they need up to a year after birth.
SVFR and CP Foods: A Match Made In Heaven
Seven Valleys Food Rescue (SVFR) had the honor of working with Tracy Marvin, an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Tompkins Cortland Community College to identify more food rescue opportunities. Tracy, who took a Food Systems II course for personal enrichment, centered her final project on what happens to food once it leaves grocery stores but is still edible. Her project This resulted in contacting several grocery stores in Cortland and, ultimately, forming a rekindling between CP Foods and Seven Valleys to take food that would otherwise be disposed of and put it into the hands of those in need. A BIG shout out to Tracy for all her hard work towards local food equity that resulted in 180 pounds of food being rescued and reallocated and THANK YOU to CP Foods for working with us so seamlessly!
