#FoodWasteFriday: Throwback Food Commandments.
This iconic poster was utilized during World War I to remind citizens of the importance in cultivating a zero-waste environment. This PSA was often referred to as “The Food Commandments" and at its heart, was not just about reducing food waste, it was about implementing change across many facets of life. A quick read down the list proves that these “commandments” have the potential to be just as challenging today as it was in 1917, when the newly formed United States Food Administration released it.
The Smithsonian Magazine noted this poster was highly circulated throughout the nation because there was a need for "...the public to modify their behavior for the national good". Perhaps we find ourselves at a similar place with a need for change in our modern era? Although this time around, it may not be because our government is leading the call to action, but because we, as individuals, have a better understanding through the knowledge and experience gained over these past 100+ years, that the resiliency of our community is critically entwined to our food system.
Our weekly behaviors and daily habits can either cultivate or limit local health, wealth, and wellbeing. Whether it’s Uncle Sam or your inner compass spurring you on, each of us can start someplace and it’s never too late to begin!
