#FoodWasteFriday: The Food Challenge
Often, food waste happens so innocuously that it's easy to think the little bits left on our plates or the leftovers pushed back in the fridge don't add up to much. Read on we interview our very own, Adrianne Traub, who took on a food waste photo challenge and shared what a week's worth of her food waste looks like.
Food Scraps Photo Challenge
One week of food scraps. One week of compost.
What was your biggest difficulty in doing the Food Scraps Photo Challenge?
This project made me pay attention to the amount of food scraps I produce. Scraps from one meal aren’t that much, but cumulatively over the course of the week it really added up! (See my photos for proof!)
What was your biggest “lesson learned” or take-away from this exercise?
I was surprise by how immensely personal my food and meals are. To share pictures of my food is to share an intimate aspect of my life – what I ate and what I wasted. Looking back on pictures of my meals over the course of a week, I saw my food values reflected back to me. Lots of locally grown veggies, hearty soups, and an excessive amount of tea. I noticed gaps in what I hope my diet looks like – I would like a more plant-based diet with less meat.
What changes will you make, if any, after this activity?
I have a much more acute awareness of the abundance of food scraps in my life! My resolve to hold myself accountable for my own food scrap composting strengthened through this experience.
Do you have any additional thoughts you'd like to share with your community?
I recognized dietary patterns that previously eluded my awareness. Although I thought avoiding bread crusts was a habit long gone from childhood – every one of my sandwiches left crumbs of crust scattered on the plate!
