The first step in your composting journey is to pick a composting "system" that works for you. There are lots of bins or composting setups you can choose from, including DIY creations, but we have made this step easy-peasy for you -- the Cortland Free Library (32 N. Church Street), Homer Town Hall (31 N. Main Street), and Seven Valleys Health Coalition (10 Kennedy Parkway) have FREE composting starter kits ready for you to pick up.

The starter kit includes:

  • A 2.5-gallon bucket to collect your kitchen scraps in

  • A composting guide

  • A magnet for your fridge of the dos/don'ts of composting

  • Stickers to decorate your bucket with

  • A link where you can share your food waste knowledge and habits with us

  • And instructions on how to get a FREE Earth Machine composting bin

Please note, all locations have the starter kits, but Homer Town Hall is the ONLY location where you can pick up an Earth Machine*. Please call ahead for Homer pickup -- (607) 749-3322 -- and ask to speak with Tanya DiGennario.

*Earth Machines are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and are prioritized for City of Cortland residents, but all are welcome. Also, it is advised to bring a truck or an SUV to pick up your Earth Machine due to its size.
