Community Day at the SVFR Hub!

Seven Valleys Food Rescue (SVFR) is officially up and running in our warehouse space on Homer Avenue. On July 15th, Seven Valleys Health Coalition (SVHC) staff hosted volunteers for a Community Day. The opportunity to volunteer was open to anyone in the community and around 35 dedicated community members came out to complete a variety of tasks.

While rescued food was being housed at the site before the 15th, the goal of Community Day was to create a real home for the SVFR program by cleaning, organizing, and brightening up the warehouse to ensure the space was inviting for SVFR volunteers as well as setting up the space to streamline the food rescue process.

Our volunteers come in all ages and abilities. We absolutely love that food rescue is an activity that transcends all boundaries!

Here’s what volunteers accomplished on the 15th:

  • Inside of the building painted

  • Shelving set up for equipment storage

  • Equipment and supplies organized and stored away

  • Bathrooms deep cleaned and primed for painting

  • Antique veggie signs cleaned up and mounted to the wall

  • Cold storage cleaned and organized

  • Properly mounted a/c panels in walk-in cooler

  • Administration area set up

  • Major weeding and brush removal along the backside of the building completed

  • Gravel delivered and spread behind the building for volunteer parking

  • Construction of a composting system started

Volunteers are integral to the success and sustainability of the SVFR program; we could not be successful without their dedication! Our volunteers not only complete routine tasks; their involvement helps build a sense of community and increases the visibility of the program, which in turn generates more community buy-in and support. We are incredibly lucky to have a group of volunteers with a variety of skill sets and who are all willing and ready to provide a helping hand at a moment’s notice and are already beginning to take on more responsibilities and leadership. From carpentry to painting to designing the flow of our program, there is always a volunteer willing to step up or jump in, which is as it should be.

A HUGE thank you to all the volunteers who not only helped on the 15th, but also during all our previous food rescue activities. Your support is the driving force of SVFR and you are very appreciated.

SVFR extends a huge thank you to these organizations for their support!

Cleaning and priming the bathrooms was one of the most daunting task of the day, but these volunteers did it all with a smile!
